The American Medical Association, the National Association of ACOs (NAACOs), and AHIP collaborated on a playbook titled “Creating a Sustainable Future for Value-Based Care: A Playbook of Voluntary Best Practices for VBC Payment Arrangements.” This 74-page guide, released ahead of NAACOs’ spring conference, aims to enhance patient experience, improve population health, and reduce costs in value-based care (VBC) arrangements.

The playbook, compiled by Aurrera Health Group and Coral Health Advisors, covers seven domains, including payment attribution, benchmarking, risk adjustment, and quality performance impact on payment. It reflects input from leaders across various healthcare settings and entities involved in VBC.

Research cited in the guidebook highlights the growth of VBC arrangements, with 24.5% of medical care in two-sided financial risk arrangements as of 2023. The guidebook emphasizes the importance of collaboration to overcome challenges and expand access to high-quality, affordable value-based care.

This publication follows the organizations’ 2023 announcement of “The Future of Sustainable Value-Based Care and Payment: Voluntary Best Practices to Advance Data Sharing,” which focused on improving patient care through enhanced data sharing practices.
